31 SPIRITS OF THE GREAT EARTH
The Spirits of the Great Earth are derived from a group of 30 Japanese kami, or spirit guardians, called Sanjubanin, who protect the Lotus Sutra. Identifying the kami, the corresponding Buddha or bodhisattva, and their relationship with the Lotus Sutra reveals a common focus of devotion that can be revered around the world.

They are represented as male or female spirits, with a graphic representation of their virtue at their center. The spirits are the earth itself and not a specific person, so graphic language is used instead of a specific likeness as in traditional iconography.

Many deities and Bodhisattvas have multiple names as they appear throughout the sutras and stories of Buddhism. Some are known to have both male and female forms, overlapping protective qualities, and embody a variety of virtues for inspiration and protection. The gender of the 31 Spirits of the Great Earth is determined by the Butsuzō-zu-i, a Japanese iconography source created in the Edo period (1603-1868).
